The first film shown in Nigeria was in 1903 at Glover Hall, Lagos, while the first film shot in Nigeria was in Jos, Plateau State, in 1904. The film was titled Palaver. Thereafter, the Colonial Film Unit came into existence and popularized film-showng through mobile cinema vans. The cinema-going culture was sustained with British and American exploits.

The Nigerian Film Corporation with headquarters in Jos, Plateau State was established through Decree 61 of 1979. By 1982, through an enabling Act of the First Republic, its first Board of Directors was inaugurated with Mr. Bayo Oduneye as Chairman, and late Adamu Halilu, as Protem General Manager. By 1985 September, Mr. Brendan Shehu was appointed General Manager, a designation that was later changed to Managing Director. By 1988, the second Board of Directors was appointed with Chief Eddie Ugbomah as its Chairman.
The third Board of Directors under Alhaji Kale Mohammed was inaugurated in 1999 whilst Dr. Hyginus Ekwuazi was acting Managing Director. He was later confirmed and his tenure ended on August 16, 2004. Dr. (Mrs.) Mercy Sokomba acted as the MD of the Corporation from 16th August 2004 to March 7th 2005. By March 2005, Mr. Afolabi Adesanya became the third Managing Director of Nigerian Film Corporation. Chief Ogban Ebock is the Chairman of the current Board of Directors.
