NFVSA

 

The National Film Video and Sound Archive (NFVSA) is a subsidiary of the Nigerian Film Corporation, a federal government parastatal of the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

MISSION

To preserve Nigeria’s motion picture heritage for posterity

AUTHORITY OF THE NFVSA

The Nigerian Film Corporation Act (1979) established the Nigerian Film Corporation. The Act mandated the Corporation to establish and maintain a National Film Archive. It was in fulfilment of that objective that the NFVSA was established.


The NFVSA also derives its authority from the Film Policy for Nigeria. Section 10.9 of the Film Policy for Nigeria states that it shall be established a National Film Archive which shall have the power to:


a) Acquire a copy of any film produced in or about Nigeria;

b) Acquire from any where in the world such films as may be considered related to or in the interest of Nigeria; and

c) Make its holdings available to the public in accordance with the Archival practices for purpose of education and research.


FUNCTIONS


The functions of the NFVSA include the following:


1. To serve as the national repository of motion pictures and related materials of lasting value to Nigeria.

2. To source, appraise and acquire motion pictures and related materials made in Nigeria or in the interest of Nigeria wherever they can be found.

3. To preserve the motion picture heritage of Nigeria as well as related documents for posterity.

4. To organize the motion picture heritage of Nigeria for easy identification, location and retrieval by way of accessioning, short listing, cataloguing, classification and indexing.

5. To make the motion picture heritage of Nigeria accessible to the present and future generation of Nigerians for research and study as is practical.

6. To encourage the use of motion pictures as source of information and as historical and cultural memoir and to foster the overall study and appreciation of moving images.

7. To promote the development of the motion picture industry in Nigeria.

8. To perform all functions that will meet the objectives for which the NFVSA was established as well as maintaining relationship with professional and similar bodies and associations both within and outside Nigeria for networking.


WHAT WE DO:


We collect films and related materials like posters, scripts, stills, books, periodicals, props, set designs and preserve them for posterity. Deposit your films and related materials for permanent preservation today. You have a lot to gain from doing that.


We have specialized temperature and relative humidity controlled vaults for film storage and preservation in the long term.


We restore damaged films.


We have a variety of motion pictures – celluloid films, video tapes and sound tracts for research, study and appreciation.


We also have in stock related materials like posters, stills, books, periodicals, newspaper clippings etc to meet your varying needs for research, study and film appreciation.


We provide access to our holdings.


We provide database/information services.
